Ghana enjoys a warm, tropical climate throughout the year, with plenty of sunshine and consistent temperatures averaging between 75°F to 90°F (24°C to 32°C). The country has two main seasons: a wet season and a dry season. The dry season (November to March) is typically hotter and dustier, especially with the Harmattan winds blowing in from the Sahara. The wet season (April to October) brings occasional rainfall—usually short and refreshing—keeping the landscape lush and vibrant.
Whether you're exploring cities, coastlines, or the countryside, Ghana’s climate supports travel year-round. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and don’t forget sun protection and a light rain jacket, especially if visiting during the rainy season.

🔴 Ghana's currency is the Cedis (GHC), which is about 15 GHC to 1 USD (Feb 2025). When exchanging currency, “new” $100 bills receive the best conversion rate compared to “old” $100 bills or smaller notes. We will have access to ATMs. Though we can make some card transactions, most expenses, including shopping, transportation, and food purchases, will be in cash.
🔴 Shopping is at your discretion. However, you can get your hair braided (~$40 - $75) or have custom outfits sewn by a seamstress or tailor (~$50 - $100 per piece). Based on average spending habits, a budget of $600 may sufficiently cover meals and light shopping for our 10-day stay.
🔴 Vendors often overcharge foreigners, so be prepared to bargain the price or speak with an Onyx Group crew member before purchasing.

Ghanaian food is very diverse. It is a product of its climate, its history and its people. Ghanaian food consists of a lot of spicy soups and stews made with tomatoes, onions, pepper, ginger and a variety of indigenous spices. Stews are thick and are usually paired with West African yam, plantains, or rice. Soups are light and accompanied with a variety of starchy swallows made from cassava, yam, plantains, or corn. Most dishes are served with a protein such as fish, chicken, beef, or goat. Notably, Ghanaian dishes are generally made-to- order and simmered with love. This additional effort may result in extended wait times in dining environments.

Though most of our time will be in Accra, we will also navigate not-so-developed areas. Because the food and environment may be unfamiliar, be sure to pack over-the-counter drugs for allergies and upset stomach/diarrhea, your prescribed anti-malarial medication, and insect repellent. Restroom facilities can vary in condition, so travel with personal hygiene products such as tissue, sanitizer, and wipes.

Check with your cell phone carrier to determine if you will have access to your talk, text, or data plans while abroad. If you have access to data, you can keep in touch with loved ones through the WhatsApp app or iMessage.

We love so many things about Ghana, particularly the food, music, traditions, and hospitality. However, no place is perfect, so travelers should be cautious about money, property, and personal safety. Be aware of where you place your phone and bags, and avoid pulling out large amounts of cash. Stay with a companion, and use your phone's "share location" feature if you venture away from the group. Remember to save the lodging address and emergency contact numbers.

Ghana has ride-sharing apps, such as Bolt and Uber, that make it relatively easy to navigate the city. Most rideshare drivers strongly prefer cash transactions and offer a predetermined fare. These services are recommended over taxis, which have less predictable rates. Google Maps also works in Ghana for most locations.
